Overtime is counted per workweek (7-day blocks from your start date), as the FLSA requires. Workweek 2 in a biweekly sheet has its own 40-hour threshold. Leave daily OT/DT blank for the standard federal rule; check California for the §510 daily rules.

The overtime traps in hospital scheduling

First: differentials raise your regular rate, so OT on a mixed day/night week is worth more than OT on base rate. Second: in California and some other states, missed meal breaks owe premium pay — the CA overtime calculator shows the premium math. Third: orientation, education days, and committee time all count as hours worked toward 40, even at different rates.

Shifts after noon: subtract 2 from the second digit — 1900 = 7 PM, 1500 = 3 PM. Midnight starts at 0000. Keep our military time chart on the locker door.

Frequently asked questions

Do nurses get overtime after 8 hours or 40 hours?
Federal law: after 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily rules — California hospitals pay daily OT after 8 under Wage Order 5; separately, the federal 8/80 hospital overtime agreement (29 CFR 778.601) pays OT over 8 hours/day or 80 hours per 14-day period when validly adopted — a different mechanism from a California alternative workweek (Labor Code §511). Confirm your facility's arrangement before filing a discrepancy.
How do night-shift differentials interact with overtime?
The differential is part of your regular rate. With base $38.50 days and $42 nights, a 45-hour week mixes rates: regular rate = total straight pay ÷ 45, and OT hours earn 1.5× that blended rate (FLSA §7(e)). The calculator does this automatically when you set per-day rates.
What is 8/80 overtime?
A hospital overtime agreement under 29 CFR 778.601: OT is due over 8 hours/day OR over 80 hours per 14-day period — whichever triggers first. It requires a prior agreement with staff; this calculator's biweekly mode with daily-OT set to 8 approximates the math for checking paychecks. (Not the same as a California alternative workweek.)
Is on-call time hours worked?
Restricted on-call (can't leave, can't drink, must respond in minutes) usually counts as hours worked; unrestricted on-call usually doesn't. Engaged-to-wait vs waiting-to-be-engaged — ask HR which your on-call is classified as; only hours worked feed overtime.
