Overtime is counted per workweek (7-day blocks from your start date), as the FLSA requires. Workweek 2 in a biweekly sheet has its own 40-hour threshold. Leave daily OT/DT blank for the standard federal rule; check California for the §510 daily rules.

Defaults tuned for the trades

  • Weekly period — matches construction's weekly OT rhythm (and weekly checks)
  • Per-day rate column — prevailing wage Monday, helper rate Friday; OT follows the blended rate
  • Custom multipliers — double time for Sundays/holidays per contract: set 2× in options, or handle holiday days in the overtime calculator
  • Early starts, dark finishes, overnight pours — 5:00 to 01:30 crosses midnight automatically
  • Per diem stays out of wages (see FAQ) — rate columns remain pure hourly

What counts as hours worked on a site

Gear-up at the yard, site-to-site travel, required safety meetings, waiting for materials on the clock — all hours worked, all counting toward overtime. The gap disputes come from: home-to-yard travel (usually not counted) and per diem days (allowance, not hours). Keep the sheet exact; it's the record that wins disagreements.

Frequently asked questions

How does per diem interact with hours and overtime?
Per diem (a flat daily allowance for meals/lodging) is not wages when it's a reasonable amount paid while traveling — it doesn't count toward the regular rate or hours. Keep it out of the rate column; track it separately (a line in the notes/period label works, or your company system).
Can prevailing-wage jobs change my OT rate?
Yes — on public works, the prevailing wage (base + fringe) becomes the rate OT multiplies. Enter the prevailing rate in the per-day rate column and OT follows it automatically.
Do travel time to site and equipment time count?
Travel from home to the normal yard usually doesn't; travel between job sites during the day, and employer-required early gear-up, usually do. Hours worked include that time — and they push toward 40 just like shovel time.
Why weekly pay periods?
Construction pay is commonly weekly — cash flow for crews and simpler OT weeks. The default here is weekly; switch to biweekly only if your shop actually runs it.
